About the Artist

Born into a working-class family in Wolverhampton, Bill Kimpton (1929–2025) was a prolific British cartoonist and illustrator celebrated for his meticulous detail and observational and sometimes sarcastic wit.

After studying at the Wolverhampton College of Art and gaining a Postgraduate Certificate of Education at Sheffield University, Bill served in the Royal Army Educational Corps in Cyprus during his National Service. A talented athlete, he played for the Combined Services football team and even trialed for Sheffield United, though he ultimately chose a career in art over the uncertain future of a 1950s professional footballer.

Bill spent much of his professional life on the faculty of the Wolverhampton College of Art (later Wolverhampton Polytechnic), eventually serving as Curator of Exhibitions. An influential teacher, he encouraged his students to push beyond traditional mediums while honing his own "serious" craft; his work was notably selected for the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Following an early retirement from teaching, Bill dedicated himself to his art full-time, his only regret was that he didn’t do it sooner. His career flourished through a primary partnership with Rainbow Cards—a publisher built on the success of his drawings—and his iconic series, "The Funny Side of Life." Using a blend of pencil, watercolor, gouache, and ink, he captured the gentle absurdity of British hobbies, from the trials of DIY to his own obsession with golf.

Today, Bill is remembered for an instantly recognizable style that brought humor to everyday frustrations, leaving a lasting legacy in British giftware, book illustration, and satirical art.
